peacock throne

The legendary  ‘peacock throne’ of shah Jahan  is a wonder of Mughal Art . the throne was commissioned shortly  after the accession of Shah Jahan, and first used on march 12,1635, at the celebration of the new year. The throne was wrought out of 1150 Kg of gold, and inlaid with 230 Kg of precious stones, including hundreds of priceless sapphire, rubies, emeralds, and pearls. Twelve emerald pillars supported the canopy over the throne. It took seven years to build, and gets it name from the figures of two peacock on top of each pillar. It was without doubt, yet another example of Shah Jahan’s unparalleled aesthetic sense and love of art. It was occupied by Aurangzeb as well as later emperors. When it was carried off to Iran in 1739 by Nadir Shah,  the Mughals lost far more than a superb treasure of jewels and gold.
